Nic.at is the central registry for the Top Level Domain .at

Nic.AT operates a database with all domain entries as well as special nameservers for the entire TLD. nic.at administrates the data of all domains below ".at", ".co.at" and ".or.at". There are no restrictions on registering .at, .co.at or .or.at domain names, you do not need a presence in the country. The domain must always be registered with nic.at in order to become functional. Nic.at use a first come first served basis. As mentioned above nic.at Internet Verwaltungs- und Betriebsgesellschaft m.b.H. is the official registry for all domains ending with .at, .co.at and .or.at.

NIC stands for Network Information Center and nic.at is the central node of the .at domain space. In 1988 the top level domain ".at" were managed by the University of Vienna. Though due to a increasing amount of registrations the nic.at GmbH was founded. In the middle of 1998, the company nic.at GmbH was established by the association of the Internet Service Providers Austria (ISPA) which also owned nic.at until 2000.

The .at top-level domain has a number of second-level domains. These are: .gv.at - for governmental institutions (registration is handled by the Austrian Federal Chancellery) .ac.at - for academic and educational institutions (registration is handled by the University of Vienna).co.at - intended for companies (unrestrictedregistration).or.at - intended for organizations (unrestricted registration) However, it is also possible to register directly at the second level. Given the number of English words that end with -at, this presents the possibility for many domain hacks. bo.at is an example to put into consideration, despite there are at least three characters for the second level required, e.g. form.at. Domain hacks treating "at" as a word in its own right (such as arrive.at) are also widespread.

Please note that when dealing with nic.at, the name servers used with the domain name need to be set up in advance, if the domain name servers do not respond to queries for the desired domain name, the Austrian registry will not allow the registration to complete. .at, .co.at and .or.at names are registered for one year at a time.

Maximum length of an Austrian .at domain name is 63 characters.
