.au is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Australia.

auDA (".au" Domain Administration Ltd) is the self-regulatory body for the ".au" domain space and the industry policy authority. auDA helps to licience second level domain registry operators, implement consumer safeguards, accredit and license registrars, develop and implement domain name policy, facilitate ".au" Dispute Resolution Policy and represent ".au" at ICANN and other international fora.

The ".au" domain space is a vital national resource for Australia, in 1999 auDA was formed to manage and protect it. In 2000 the Australian Government reviled that auDA was the appropriate body to manage the .au domain space. ICANN recognised auDA as the suitable operator for the ".au" domain space during October 2001. ".au" holds a numerous amount of second level domains names, to make it easier to comprehend the tables below can help.

Open Second Level Domains

The first table shows the open 2LDs, this means that the general public can register if they subject to eligibility criteria.

.asn.au For incorporated associations, political parties, trade unions, sporting and special interest clubs.
.com.au For commercial entities, such as companies (with ACN as registered through ASIC), and businesses (registered with state governments).

Closed Second Level Domains

The second table shows 2LDs that are closed to the general public and only available for a specific audience/sector.

.edu.au For educational institutions registered at federal or state level. This domain is managed on behalf of the Australian education sector by the Australian Information and Communications Technology in Education Committee (AICTEC).
.gov.au For federal, state and local government bodies. This domain is managed on behalf of the Australian government sector by the Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO).
.csiro.au For the sole use of the Commonwealth Science and Industry Research Organisation (CSIRO). This domain is managed by CSIRO.

Following an open tender process in 2005, the auDA signed a four year licence agreement with AusRegistry to commence on 1 July 2006.

This agreement make AusRegistry Pty Ltd the registrar operator for seven of the many 2LDs under the ".au" domain. The following seven are under agreement ".asn.au", ".com.au", ".edu.au", ".gov.au", ".id.au", ".net.au" and ".org.au". This means that the since the AusRegistry operates under a registry license agreement with auDA. It should be noted that the AusRegistry does not provide services directly to the public. Private persons then need turn to their registrar of record in the first instance to update their domain name records etc.
