.bv is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Bouvet Island, an uninhabited island in the south Atlantic sea. The island is a dependant territory of Norway lying to the southwest of South Africa and is considered the most remote island in the world. The domain is administered by Norid, the registry also responsible for the .no (Norway) domain.
Norid was delegated both the .bv and .sj (Jan-Mayen) domains in 1997 and has been operating them ever since. Currently Norid's domain name policy does not allow for any registrations under the .bv or .sj top-level domains. These domains are being reserved for potential future use. Although the domains remain unused, they are still allocated top-level domains.
Norid will not allow any entity or corporation to buy the .bv top-level domain as the Norwegian authorities are strongly against commercialising their domain resources. The domain name policy is backed by the Norwegian official policy and the views of the Ministry of Transport and Communications. Norid remains fully dedicated to ensuring that Norwegian Internet services are available globally and encourages the use of the .no domain.
Since 1991, use of the .no domain has grown at an almost exponential rate with now over 400,000 registered users and approximately 400 registrars. 91% of Norwegian organisations are now using .no as their primary domain.
