Canadian domain names have the suffix ".ca", and are restricted to Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada or trademark holders (the domain name must match the trademark).

Once registered, ".ca" domain names can not be transferred between registrars until 30 days has passed from the date of registration, this rule is set by the registry and domains are "locked" at the registry to ensure this rule can not be bypassed.

The Canadian registry ("CIRA") reserves the right to request documentation to prove the validity of information provided by the registrant when registering the domain name. This can be requested by the registry at any time while the domain is registered. If this information isn't supplied to the registry, and the registrant has not contacted the registry to explain why the requested information hasn't been provided, the domain may be suspended for 60 days. If the matter isn't resolved between the registrant and registrar, the domain may be cancelled and eventually made available for general registration again.

The registry also state that the registrant must immediately inform them of any pending or threatened claim, demand, action, cause of action, proceeding, lawsuit, investigation or application ("Claim") in relation to any Domain Name Registration

The domain name must also not be used to slander or discriminate against another person, or be used in connection with this. The domain name must also not be used for any purposes which are illegal, or would bring the Canadian registry into disrepute.

When you register a Canadian domain name, under ".ca", you are accepting the Canadian registries rules and agreeing to their terms and conditions. If the registrant breaches the registration agreement at any time during the registration period of a domain name, the Canadian registry CIRA may ban the individual or organisation from registering new Canadian domain names for up to three years, at its discretion.
