The country code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD) for Costa Rica is ".cr"
It is administered by the National Academy of Sciences.
Individuals both living in Costa Rica and abroad can apply for a ".cr" domain name The following name regulations applies to a ".cr" domain name:
1. The total length of a domain name should not exceed 63 characters.
2. Valid characters are numbers, letters of the English alphabet from A to Z, numbers 0 to 9 and the hyphen (-).
3. Domain names must not begin or end with the hyphen (-) or carry two dashes followed by each other (--).
Costa Rica domain names are available directly under .cr, but also under several sub-domains, these are:

| .co.cr | Commercial: legal and natural persons engaged in commercial activity or other activity. |
| .fi.cr | Financial: financial institutions in the Republic of Costa Rica that is regulated and licensed by the National Financial System Supervision (CONASSIF). |
| .ac.cr | Academic: Universities, Graduate Schools and research institutions. State universities should be recognized by CONARE and private universities by CONESUP. |
| .go.cr | Governmental: the government of the Republic of Costa Rica, such as: Ministries, Executive, Legislative and Judicial, municipalities, autonomous entities, among others. |
| .ed.cr | Education: pre-school, primary, secondary, university and for any other educational institutions authorized by the Ministry of Public Education of Costa Rica. |
| .sa.cr | Health: health entities recognized by the CCSS and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Costa Rica. |
| .or.cr | Organizations: Organizations and Voluntary Associations. |
If a name is registered simultaneously under. Ac.cr. Co.cr. Ed.cr. Fi.cr. Go.cr. Or.cr and. Sa.cr , the to registry will practice a first come first serve basis. This mean that the domain will be granted to the owner who sent the first electronic application for registration. Of course this is if the application meets the requirements needed for registering a ".cr" domain name.
The National Academy of Sciences (The registry) shall prevent the abusive registration of domains and hence protect trademarks under the law of intellectual property. The registry will refuse requests that are doing against morality and the public order. According to the law in Costa Rica, domain names that include combinations of characters that are similar to generic words of national interest will be reserved by the National Academy of Sciences.
