.cx is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Christmas Island.
Originally it was operated by a company with offices in Australia and the United Kingdom who went bankrupt and ceased operations and decided to voluntarily transfer management to the Christmas Island Internet Administration (CIIA - known as Dot CX Limited at the time).
The local (shire) government of Christmas Island endorsed the transfer, but the Commonwealth of Australia (which has international authority over Christmas Island as an external territory) did not immediately approve it. Australia has since published a Memorandum of Understanding which recognises CIIA as the legitimate manager of ".cx".
CIIA is a community-owned non-profit company which alos provides internet access to the island's inhabitants.
The Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) for the top-level doman ".cx" for Christmas Island sets out the actions prohibited to users of the Christmas Island Internet Administration Limited Network (CIIA Network). These users are defined as anybody who uses the ".cx" domain registry, registrants of a ".cx" country code top-level domain name, and/or users of hardware, name servers, bandwidth, telecommunications transport, zone files or e-mail routing services or of any other domain name resolution systems and services in the ".cx" registry and zone.
CIIA reserves the right to modify or update this AUP at any time and any such modifications or restatements shall be posted on CIIAs website at http://www.nic.cx from time to time.
The country code top-level domain ".cx" is used for a wide assortment of sites, of which most of them are not based in Christmas Island.
Registrations can be made directly at second-level, though some third-level names exist for Christmas Island sites such as "gov.cx".
There are no registration restrictions for the country code top-level domain ".cx" for Christmas Island.
