You need to have a local contact in Germany to register a ".de" domain name. If you do not have a local contact, we may be able to provide you with one, please enquire about this.

There are also very specific requirements regarding the name servers used with the desired domain name. The name servers must be set up in advance of applying for the domain name, and there are specific demands on the zone files configuration for the name.

An extract from a working ".de" zone is listed below, please pay special attention to the slave refresh period, slave retry interval, slave expire time and negative response TTL. If you plan to use a commercial web or email hosting provider to host your ".de" domain name's services, ensure they know there are special requirements their name servers need to respect before DeNIC (the German registry) will attach the name servers to the desired domain name. One of the name servers must be on a different sub-net.

German domain names are registered directly under ".de", and are available to anyone on a first come first served basis.

".de" domain names can be registered on a yearly basis.

Maximum length of a German ".de" domain name is 63 characters, and the minimum length is 3 characters.

It is not allowed to use any of the combinations of letters that are used for road-vehicle licence plates in Germany indicating the district in which they are issued, or any combination that would result from replacing an umlaut in such a licence-plate geographic abbreviation with the two-letter equivalent, i.e. ä with ae, ö with oe or ü with ue. Please Click Here for more information on this.

".de" is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the Federal Republic of Germany. DENIC (the Network Information Centre responsible for ".de" domains) does not require specific second- level domains, as it is the case with the .uk domain range for example.

The name is based on the first two letters of the German name for Germany (Deutschland). Prior to 1989, East Germany had a separate ISO 3166-1 code (dd) but it was never assigned its own ccTLD; ".de" is the only German ccTLD that ever existed.

".de" is currently the second most popular ccTLD in terms of number of registrations, after ".cn", and is third after ".com" and ".cn" among all TLDs.

The first point of registration for ".de" domains was at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Dortmund. uni-dortmund.de was among the first registered .de-domains. ".de" registrations may be directly ordered from DENIC but it is faster and cheaper to do so via a DENIC member (registrar).

The domain name must have at least 3 letters and may not be exclusively composed of numbers.

The only current known exceptions are ".db.de" (Deutsche Bahn), ".ix.de", and ".hq.de" which were registered before the three letter rule was adopted. Registrations of internationalized domain names are also accepted so that all diacritics of German may be used.

In many romanic languages, e.g., Spanish, French, Romanian and Portuguese, "de" expresses the genitive of a noun (like "of" in English). This is exploited in domain registrations under the German TLD for romance language webhosts that offer customized sites, like elforo.de (theforum.of), cleverly encoding the site name into the URL path, such as elforo.de/wikipedia, meaning theforum.of/wikipedia.

Today there are over 12 million ".de" domains registered.
