.ee is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) of Estonia and it is operated by EENet.
Since 1997 EENet has been operating as a state agency administered by the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research. The Estonian Educational and Research Network is a governmental non-profit organization that was established in August 1993. Their purpose is to manage, coordinate and develop the computer network of science, education and culture. EENet's services include a permanent Internet connection as well as webhosting, e-mail, ftp, DNS and consultations in the event of security problems.
Estonian domain names are registered directly under ".ee" and also under ".com.ee" and ".org.ee". Both ".ee" and ".com.ee" domain names are only available to institutions who are registered in Estonia. In addition, each organisation registered in Estonia only qualifies for one domain name. It is not sufficient to have a local presence in Estonia, the company needs to be registered there.
Maximum length of a Estonia ".ee" domain name is 63 characters.
There is a limit of one domain name per legal entity, and registrations of additional names to protect trademarks are specifically denied because "The domain name has no trademark status. As domains under ".ee" are meant to be institution's identification on the Internet (like the register code in the commercial register), registration of additional domain in the defense of a trademark or a name form is not possible. Valid registrations are free of charge.
If wanting to transfer a domain name under the domain ".ee" make sure to do the following: Ask current holder to release the domain by sending the Registry (EENet) an official letter, signed by a member of the board of the institution, confirming the renouncement of the domain. After this has been completed the new applicant can submit an electronic application according to the Official Regulations on Registration of Domain Names under ".ee".
Domain names under ".ee" are registered for an indefinite period unless the holder of the domain no longer exists or if an applicant submits false data, the hostmaster may annul the registration of the domain. In this case the holder will be informed and has 14 days to respond before the registration is annulled. Registration can be cancelled or annulled if it has been impossible to get in touch with the administrative contact person of the domain holder for a long period (several months). Please note that the holder of a ".ee" domain is responsible for the renewal of the contact data in the database managed by the Registry (EENet).
