.fi is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Finland.
It is operated by FICORA, the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority.
December 4, 1986 an application to register top level domain for Finland was sent by Finnish Unix Users Group from Tampere. The application was accepted and the administration of .fi TLD was granted to Tampere University of Technology. Later the administration was transferred first to FICIX and later to FICORA.
In the past FICORA regulated .fi domains very strictly. Domain names were only admitted to company names or companies that owned trademarks. This policy led to Finnish companies' applying for domains under other top-level domains. The policy was changed on September 1, 2003.
.fi was once best known among non-Finnish internet users as the TLD of the Penet remailer (anon.penet.fi), a privately operated server which enabled users to post e-mail and Usenet messages anonymously in the early 1990s.
Since March 1, 2006, also private persons have been able to apply for a domain name. Some restrictions still apply, for example:
The allowed characters are letters from a to z
The allowed numbers are 0 to 9 and the dash (-).
The native language characters used in Finland are acceptable.
The domain name cannot begin or end in a dash.
The third and fourth character of the domain name cannot both be dashes.
The domain name ".fi" domain name can consist of 2-63 characters.
Make sure that the domain name is not trademarked. This can be done by searching the free public registers. (Finnish Trade Register, Finnish Register of Associations, Finnish Register of Foundations, Finnish Trademark Register and EU Trademark Register). This means that you can not register the names of state-owned companies, public corporations, independent public services, embassies of foreign states, public associations as well as already established names.
The holder of a domain name based on a person's real name must be a natural person with the same name. The same goes for companies or organizations, they must be registered in the trade register or the registers of associations, foundations, political parties or trademarks in Finland whose official name contains the name used for the domain name as a whole. This also makes it impossible to apply for the acronym of a company or top-level global (national) domains tex ".com" or ".se".
In September 2009, it will be possible to register fi-domains for a five year period. Already registered domains will have the option to renew their existing name as well. The changes will also affect the waiting period of domain names. Currently there is a waiting period after the termination, expiration or revocation of a domain name. This means that during this waiting period, a domain name cannot be registered to a new holder. After September 2009 this waiting period will be one month instead of the current three months
Today (2009-07-13) there are 214.795 registerd ".fi" domain names.
