The Global Name Registry (GNR) is the official registry of the ".name" domain.

They were selected by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in 2000 and their objectives are administer, develop and market the ".name" domain. GNR are based in London and the company is owned by GNR Limited which in turn was founded in 1999 to provide personalized communication services.

The ".name" domain s the only top-level domain reserved exclusively for individuals. Any individual in the world can obtain a domain name in form of their own name. The ".name" domains can be purchased through ICANN accredited registrars (like BB Online) for a period up to 10 years into the future.

So why is a "name" domain attractive?

• Well first of all with a ".name" domain consumers around the world can obtain a permanent, personal web address in the form of their own personal name. Whether its used to show off family photos or an online portfolio a ".name" domain is the best way to express an individual online.

• Second of all its global! ".name" are for individuals what ".com" are for businesses, and the best thing is that no third party will be mentioned in your domain, so with a ".name" domain it is possible to create a unique unspoiled "digital identity".

Domain Names. Domain names in the .name TLD will be registered at the second and third level, in the following formats:

• Second level registrations: xxxx.name,

• Third level registrations: xxxx.xxxx.name

However when registering a Personal ".Name" domain, registrants can add numeric characters to the beginning or the end of their Personal Name. This is done so that if a person with a common name say Jack.Davis unsuccessfully attempts to register jack.davis.name, the possibility is there to add numerical numbers e.g. jack.davis1946.name or jack1946.davis.name.

So what names can be registered under the TLD ".name"?

• The Personal Name of an Individual. Any person can register his or her own Personal Name.

To clarify a "Personal Name" is a person's legal name, or a name by which the person is commonly known. So pseudonyms used by actors, painters, singer etc. will be approved. • The Personal Name of a Fictional Character can also be registered presumed that the person or entity that applies for the domain has the trademark or service mark rights to the character's Personal Name.

The Global Name Registry has reserved a set of suffixes on the second level domain of .NAME by default. (See the table below) The domains ending in these suffixes can only be registered for thrid level domains.

As an example, all domains where the second level string ends in "-family", e.g. "davis- family.NAME", are reserved and can only be used for third level registrations, e.g. "jackdavis@smith-family.NAME".

The following suffixes are reserved on the second level for third level registrations only:
