The DNC (Domain Name Commission Limited) has the role to manage the ".nz" domain name space and to protect its interests and rights of everyone involved in using it. The DNC is owned by InternetNZ who is open to anyone who wants join and influence the Internet's evolution.
The DNC are creating a fair environment for registering and managing ".nz" domain names. This includes authorizing registrars and administering a dispute resolution service but also the monitoring and developing of the competitive registrar market.
There are a limited number of second-level domains available for ".nz". Below we introduce the second-level domains names in two tables. The second table includes second-level domain names with restricted usage whereby proposed domain names are scrutinised for their suitability by a moderator appointed by the DNC.

| ".maori" | Māori people, groups, and organisations. |
| ".net" | Organisations and service providers directly related to the NZ Internet. |
| ".org" | Not-for-profit organisations. |
| ".school" | Primary, secondary and pre-schools and related organisations. |
InternetNZ has granted permission to organisations to moderate membership of the follwing five specific second-level domain names.
.cri Crown Research Institutes
".cri.nz" names are only available to Crown Research Institutes and an application needs to be made by their authorised staff. Observe that there are some technical standards. For instance two character names are not allowed. ames will need to be chosen which avoid confusion between crown research institutes. The authorised registrar is Domainz.
".govt" National, regional and local government organisations operating with statutory powers
".govt.nz" names are only availiable to central or local government bodies needs to be registered by their authorised staff.
Names will need to be chosen which avoid confusion between agencies.
The norm is to use three to four letter names in order to represent departments or other central or local government bodies. Please note that this name should be the commonly-known abbreviation for that body.
Generic and project names can only be registered with this particular TLD if they are pan-departmental and of national significance. The authorised registrar for the .govt.nz is the Government Registrar. http://www.dns.govt.nz. Accordingly new registrations may only be made through them and domain names may not be transferred to other registrars.
.iwi A traditional Māori tribe
Hāpū that belongs to a traditional Māori Iwi or taura here Iwi group operating with the permission of the main Iwi.
To receive a iwi.nz domains you must meet the following criteria:
Criteria 1. You must be a traditional Māaori tribe, Hāpū that belongs to a traditional Maori Iwi or taura here Iwi group operating with the permission of the main Iwi.
Criteria 2. You must be a legal body.
Criteria 3. Only genuine Māori names will be allowed in the domain pursuant to the following: If an Iwi is known by an abbreviation then they shall be accepted with their abbreviation as their iwi name.
It should be mentioned that tribal project names and tribal owned companies will not be accepted in "iwi.nz". Urban Maori groups may apply for ".iwi.nz" if the following is met: Must have been established for over 12 months.
A legal body
Must represent a reasonable proportion of urban Maori in your area. Possess a database of all members.
The authorised registrar to accept ".iwi.nz" registrations is Freeparking.
.mil Military organisations of the NZ Government
Full justification of request made to NZDF by application party in accordance with NZDF policy for domain name registration (DFO 101 Chapter 5, Section 8). A copy of the policy is available on the NZDF intranet.
Criteria for judgement of whether name is appropriate:
it must not be of a nature that could discredit the NZDF, or the New Zealand Government;
it must be relevant to the required function, and must avoid confusion
it must comprise three or more characters; and
if including an acronym to represent a department or military unit, they must use the commonly known abbreviation for that unit.
New request for third level domain names must be approved by the NZDF Chief Information Officer. The delegated registrar authorised to accept .mil.nz registrations is Domainz.
.parliament Agencies and individuals who are a part of the parliamentary
system but not a part of the executive government.

The DNC can help you by offering advice on issues such as incorrect domain name registration information, disputes over who should be the registrant of a ".nz" domain name and complaints about registrars not abiding by ".nz" policies.
The DNC does not have the jurisdiction to handle complaints relating to illegal or malicious use of a domain name, similarly the DNC's mandate does not extend to the content of the websites that are associated with any ".nz" domain name.
