.sc is the Internet country code top-level domain name (ccTLD) for Seychelles.
Officially known as the Republic of Seychelles, is an archipelago nation of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, about 1,500 kilometres east of mainland Africa. Seychelles has the smallest population of any state in Africa.
The top-level domain name ".sc" was introduced in 1997, and is operated and sponsored by VCS (Pty) Limited. Though the ".sc" top-level domain name's intended use is for entities connected with Seychelles, the domain name has been registered for a random assortment of sites, of which only some are related to Seychelles itself. The ".sc" was marketed to businesses in Scotland and North Carolina, however, the domains are still subject to Seychelles registry rules. One such company who marketed the ".sc" domain name internationally was SCregistrars who have since closed down.
Registrations for .sc domain names are directly at second level or at third level beneath various second-level domain names, which are listed below:
- com.sc -- commercial
- net.sc -- network infrastructure machines and organizations
- edu.sc -- education institutions
- gov.sc -- governmental institutions
- org.sc -- miscellaneous, usually non-profit organizations
Domain names that include trademarks of other parties or words which are not permitted in business names, unless the applicant is legally entitled to use such words are turned down at registration. Furthermore, domain names are unauthorized to be registered with names that are offensive, obscene or may confuse or mislead the public.
Domain names are recommended to be short (no more than 10 characters), compromising of only the letters a-z and the digits 0-9. The dash (-) may also be included, except for the first or last character. Domain names consisting of a single character are not accepted at registration.
