Domain names under the El Salvador ccTLD are restricted, and the admin contact needs to be based in El Salvador to be eligible to register under ".sv".
The application is made electronically and on paper, so it may take several days for a new domain name to be accepted and created by the registry as each application is manually approved, and the postal service will take time to deliver the paper application.
Domains are registered under sub-domains under ".sv", these are:
- ".edu.sv" - Education and/or research institutions
- ".gob.sv" - National governmental institutions
- ".com.sv" - Comercial entities and other not included in the rest
- ".org.sv" - Non-profit Organizations
- ".red.sv" - National network administration
The registry state that:
Sub-domain names that may be confused with some type of official and formal representation of the country will not be allowed.
We are not sure as to how this can be defined, a list of prohibited domain names is not published. If your proposed domain name is likely to fit in with this context, be aware that the registry have stated the above rule. Each domain name is approved by the registry on an individual basis by the registry, if you contact us with the ".sv" domain names you desire, we can contact the registry and see if the domain names are considered to "refer to official aspects or topics of the country".
The ".sv" registry have also forbidden any domain names which are identical to the names of internet organisations or protocols, such as "Internet", "InterNIC", "IANA", etc.
Registering domain names in order to re-sell them at a later date is forbidden by the ".sv" registry, they state:
